Curves Ahead is the God of Rebirth, forging a new path through catastrophe to rebuild a better world. Inspired by the neon signage and garb of New Zealand road crews juxtaposed against the verdant natural landscape of Aotearoa, this piece is an ode to the hard work and resilience required to pick up the pieces after a disaster. The garment reconstitutes traditional construction equipment to build a domineering figure who will lead the way to new life.
Sculpturally hand-draped out of vinyl reflective construction signs, the body of the dress features exaggerated hip forms and a sheer wall of reflective protection that extends to the God’s nose. A spiked crown of plastic cones and poles sits atop the head, held together with custom-modeled 3D printed components. Meanwhile a spray of plastic mesh fencing emanates from the skirt, formerly a barrier, now an inviting ruffle of celebration. Both armor and softness, Curves Ahead promises that a colorful future lies beyond devastation, leading the charge to rebuild what once was and what is yet to be.
This garment was the winner of the Supreme Award and Avant-Garde Section Award at World of WearableArt in Wellington, NZ in 2024.
